Her Excellency visits Kapilbastu, Pyuthan and Nawalparasi

Kathmandu 5 Oct. 2012 - Her Excellency Ms Susan Grace, the Australian Ambassador to Nepal, visited different enterprises in Kapilbastu, Pyuthan and Nawalparasi districts and interacted with the micro-entrepreneurs

On 1 October, she visited the rope-making group enterprise run by the micro-entrepreneurs at Bankasabasa ward no. 1 of Shivapur Village Development Committee (VDC) Kapilbastu and interacted with the entrepreneurs. She was happy to learn that the entrepreneurs had been doing good business. The ropes are exported to India as well. Later, Her Excellency visited the ginger-processing enterprise at Baddanda of Pyuthan district and interacted with the entrepreneurs. "I am happy to learn that most of the women have benefitted from this enterprise," she said. The entrepreneurs made a presentation on the activities of the group enterprise, which she listened to carefully and asked a few questions.

The same day, the micro-entrepreneurs and government officials of Pyuthan district welcomed her upon arrival at Maranthana where she observed a mini expo of goods produced by the micro-entrepreneurs and interacted with the participating entrepreneurs. Then she visited the Jhimruk Herbal Soap Enterprise (Chyuri Herbal Soap) of Ms Durga KC at Maranthana VDC ward no. 1 Maranthana. She observed the production process and interacted with Ms KC.

The next day, the Ambassador visited the Allo fiber-making enterprise at Lung VDC ward no. 6 Bahane, observed the entire process and interacted with the micro-entrepreneurs and the stakeholders. The Local Development Officer (LDO) and the District Forest Officer of Pyuthan were also present. She expressed happiness as the enterprise was generating employment opportunities and income to a large number of poor rural women of Pyuthan, Baglung and Rolpa districts. In the afternoon, she met with the Chief District Officer (CDO), LDO and the Chief of the district police at Khalanga, the headquarters of Pyuthan and took stock of the activities of Micro-Enterprise Development Programme (MEDEP).

On 3 October, Her Excellency visited the District Hospital of Arghakhanchi and held a meeting with the CDO, LDO and other government officials and inquired about the health and education situation of the district. The same day, she visited a leaf plate-making enterprise run by the local women at Gorusinghe in Kapilbastu. Interacting with the entrepreneurs, she expressed happiness over the zeal and progress the women had made. She also observed bee keeping enterprises and interacted with the members of bee keepers' cooperative at Banganga.

"I want to promote the honey you produce even in Australia, but due to long distance, it is not feasible. However, I am very happy to know about the success of the bee keeping enterprise, which is one of the successes of MEDEP," she said.

On the last leg of her tour, she visited Telha in Nawalparasi district, observed the Pater (wild fiber plant) enterprise, and interacted with the entrepreneurs on 4 October.  "I am so happy to see you doing this enterprise with great skill and enthusiasm and making a good earning," she said. She also visited Dhaka weaving enterprise at Gaganbasti, dairy at Gopigunj and micro-entrepreneurs' sales outlet at Bardaghat and interacted with the entrepreneurs.

She also had a meeting with the CDO, LDO and chief of police of Nawalparasi district and inquired about the activities of MEDEP. Later, she visited Kanchenjunga Polytechnic Institute (KPIN), Padsari, Bhairahawa - supported by MEDEP to produce Enterprise Development Facilitators - and interacted with the female students.

Her team comprised Dr Lakshman Pun, National Programme Manager;  Mr Megh Raj Acharya, Micro-enterprise Specialist; Mr Dan Giri, Micro-enterprise Specialist; Mr Bijaya GC, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer; Mr Ram Sharan Sedhai, Communication and Documentation Specialist of MEDEP, and Mr Krishna Karki, Program and Research Officer at the Australian Embassy.
