Her Excellency inaugurates Rustic Store building


Dolakha, 11 December 2012 - Her Excellency Ms Susan Grace, the Australian Ambassador to Nepal, inaugurated a Rustic Store operated by Hariyali Agriculture Cooperative at Halhale, Lakuri Village Development Committee, 8 amid a function at Lakuri, Dolakha here today.

Following the opening of the building, Her Excellency observed the rustic store, a store for preserving the seeds of potato, and interacted with the officials of the cooperative. The building was constructed at a cost of Rs 577,000 of which Micro-Enterprise Development Programme (MEDEP) provided Rs 100,000, community people contributed labour worth Rs 150,000 and the Potato Development Programme of the Department of Agriculture provided Rs 237,000.

Mr Om Tamang, Chair of the Hariyali Agriculture Cooperative spoke about community mobilization and the construction of the cooperative. Her Excellency also observed a cultural programme staged by the local people with a keen interest.

Then she moved to Charikot and observed a mini expo organized by the micro-entrepreneurs on the District Development Committee (DDC) premises and participated in a meeting with stakeholders. Mr Narayan Prasad Sedhai, Programme Officer at the DDC presented on MEDEP activities. Her Excellency said that the Australian government was extending support to MEDEP as MEDEP has produced results a large number of women have benefited from the activities of MEDEP in the district.

"MEDEP has been successful in supporting female-headed households and giving employment. I have found enterprise at home better than jobs abroad. MEDEP has many benefits and the beneficiaries have become models," Her Excellency observed. She also thanked the LDO, DDC and MEDEP team for the work done in the district.

Later, Her Excellency held a meeting the Chief District Officer (CDO), Local development Officer (LDO) and and chief of security at the District Administration Office, Charikot, Dolakha.

On 12 Her Excellency visited Dhaka enterprises at Khandbari 4 in Ramechhap district. Interacting with the entrepreneurs, Her Excellency said, "Dhaka is my favourite MEDEP product." Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) helps MEDEP to develop women entrepreneurs and MEDEP has benefited many women, she said. Her Excellency also suggested the entrepreneurs to improve the quality of Dhaka products.


Later in the afternoon, after holding a meeting with the CDO, LDO and chief of security, she observed a mini expo organized by micro-entrepreneurs at the DDC premises and interacted with the entrepreneurs.

She also participated in a meeting organized by the DDC at its office and interacted with the stakeholders. Mr Deepak Subedi, Programme Officer of Ramechhap District presented on MEDEP activities being carried out in Ramechhap.

Her team comprised Mr Krishna Karki, Research Officer at the Australian Embassy, Mr Kiran Paudyal, Micro-enterprise Specialist, Ms Bina KC, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, and Mr Ram Sharan Sedhai, Communication and Documentation Specialist of MEDEP.
